EPICo is mainly founded upon the information exchange between its members, using this as an opportunity to strengthen and develop practice across Europe.
From June 10th to 11th, representatives of Shared Archiving Austria had the opportunity to visit the Mo i Rana branch of the National Library of Norway, located just a few kilometres south of the Arctic Circle which accommodates the Services of the Norwegian Repository Library as well as Sustainable Archiving and Digitisation and Digital Preservation. The Austrian delegates were warmly welcomed (although temperatures were quite low). These two days offered a lot of chances to not only have strategic management discussions but also with many experts of the various departments.
An unique feature of Mo i Rana is the effort taken to digitise and archive not only printed material but all outputs related to Norway in a wide range of formats (audio, video, photos, archival material, websites …). The Austrian delegation was deeply impressed by the technical equipment and, above all, the accompanying expertise of the employees. This was made possible because the institution is open to recruiting and training experts of many different fields.
In addition to many thought-provoking notions, the colleagues from Vienna University Library took particular benefit and inspiration for the planned expansion of digitisation services and related work processes.
